Los Portland Timbers del técnico venezolano Giovanni Savarese, jugarán otra la Final de la Copa MLS. El conjunto verde y amarillo alcanzó la final nacional despues de su victoria 2-0 frente al Real Salt Lake, en la final de conferencia Oeste.
Se disputarán el campeonato frente a el New York City FC, el sábado 11 de diciembre. NYCFC ganó la final de la Conferencia Este 2-1 contra el Philadelphia Union. El Unión abrió el marcador por cortesía de un gol en propia puerta en el minuto 63, pero NYCFC regresó rugiendo. Maxi Moralez empató en el minuto 65 y Talles Magno anotó el gol de la victoria a los 88.
"El sueño se hizo realidad, se hizo realidad por el arduo trabajo que todos han realizado (el equipo) este año. Nos sentimos muy orgullosos y entusiasmados”, dijo el criollo en conferencia de prensa, tras el partido.
Savarese llegó al club de los ’Leñadores’ en el año 2017, desde entonces ha llevado a los suyos a 3 finales, confirmándose como un técnico sobradamente capaz dentro del circuito norteamericano.
Portland avanzó a su tercera Copa MLS (2015, 2018, 2021) y albergará la final por primera vez. Los Timbers ganaron la Copa MLS en Columbus, OH contra el Crew en 2015 y fueron derrotados por Atlanta United de Josef Martinez, en 2018.
